MyAppointmentPal started with a problem my wife, TJ, couldn't stop thinking about.
When TJ moved to Orlando, she didn't have the built-in support system most people take for granted. So when she needed a medical procedure requiring sedation—one of those moments when you legally cannot drive yourself home—she had no one to call. No family nearby. No old friends five minutes away. Just a new city and a form asking for the name and phone number of the person picking her up.
As she made friends, the problem changed shape rather than disappearing. Now she had people to ask, but asking felt heavier than she expected. A procedure involving sedation can mean asking someone to take half a day off work, use paid time off, and rearrange their schedule just to sit in a waiting room and drive you home. TJ hated asking and felt guilty every time a friend said yes. She began wondering how many other people were in the same position: needing a ride and either having no one to ask or hating that they had to ask at all.
Then something happened that made the problem impossible to ignore.
I had a colonoscopy at AdventHealth in downtown Orlando. The man in the next bed had done everything right—the preparation, the fasting, all of it—for his colonoscopy and endoscopy. Then a nurse asked whether he had someone to drive him home. He didn't. Because of that one missing piece, his procedure was canceled. A full day of preparation and discomfort was undone by logistics that had nothing to do with his health.
That was the moment TJ's idea stopped being a “someday” thought and became something we had to build. A ride home shouldn't be the reason a procedure gets canceled, and needing one shouldn't mean a friend has to sacrifice a day of work.
